What you need to know

There is a three-stage Graduated Driver Licensing (MGDL) program for all new motorcycle riders in Saskatchewan. It’s been designed to help riders build their skills and knowledge over time, moving them through increasing levels of risk as they gain motorcycle driving experience. It starts with getting an Endorsement 6 to operate a motorcycle as a learner, which includes tests of basic knowledge and skills. Then you spend time riding as a learner before you take a road test to get an Endorsement M on your Class 1 – 5 driver’s licence. All of this is covered in-depth in the MGDL section of this manual.

Being a motorcycle rider requires knowledge and skills. Additional equipment, proper gear, helmet regulations and familiarization with your bike are also covered in these pages. To ride a motorcycle well, consider your physical and mental condition because driving it takes more concentration, physical strength and endurance than driving a car.

Most collisions involving motorcycles happen due to a lack of experience. Skills such as lane positioning, how to react to other driver’s mistakes, how to see like an expert, how to position yourself to be seen by others, how to handle dangerous surfaces and emergencies are essential.

Before riding your motorcycle avoid anything that impacts your driving ability, including impairment by drugs and alcohol. There is also zero tolerance for impaired driving for those in the MGDL program, regardless of age. The same goes for motorcycle riders less than 19 years old.

What you learn will help you feel more secure and let you really enjoy riding your motorcycle. The skills and techniques in this handbook, along with hands-on learning experiences riding your bike, will help you meet any challenges on our streets and highways.
